Winter Wellness Tips from the May Support Group
Here is the May Support Group report from Dr Michele Van Vuuren. Guest Speaker was Michelle Graham.
Michelle Graham, the practice Dietitian was the speaker at the May Support Group. The night was well attended and informative.
The takeaway messages from Michelle and the group were:
- Hydration is Key :
- Consistent Water Intake: Aim to drink your recommended water intake daily, even if you don't feel as thirsty in the colder weather.
- Warm Hydration Options: Enjoy herbal teas, warm water with lemon, or low-sodium broths to stay hydrated and warm.
- Embrace Nutritious Comfort Foods:
- Hearty Soups and Stews: Incorporate vegetables, lean proteins, and legumes into your soups and stews for a nutrient-dense meal.
- Manage Portion Sizes:
- Mindful Eating Practices: Eat slowly and listen to your body's hunger and fullness signals. Use smaller plates to help control portions.
- Meal Prepping: Plan and portion your meals in advance to avoid overeating and make healthier choices.
- Stay Active Indoors:
- Indoor Exercise Options: Try home workouts like yoga, pilates, or bodyweight exercises to stay active.
- Short Activity Breaks: Take breaks throughout the day to stretch, walk around your home, or do a quick exercise routine.
- Take Care of Your Mental Health:
- Stay Connected: Engage with friends and family through virtual meetings or phone calls to combat feelings of isolation.
Mindfulness and Relaxation: Incorporate stress-reducing activities like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or journaling into your routine.
By following these tips, you can maintain your health and well-being throughout the winter season.
Our June Support group topic is 'Patient-Driven". "Patient-Driven" for our Bariatric Support Group means that the needs, goals, and experiences of the patient's guide the focus and direction of the evening.
This approach emphasizes empowering patients to take an active role in their health journey, encouraging them to share their personal stories, challenges, and successes. It fosters a supportive environment where patients collaborate, provide mutual support, and learn from each other, ensuring that the group's activities and discussions are relevant and meaningful to their individual and collective experiences.
I look forward to seeing you at the June Support Group. Stay warm, stay active, and stay connected!
