This month, Doctor Phil Lockie and Mrs Shirley Lockie are attending conferences on bariatric and hernia surgery.
Here is an update from Dr Phil Lockie.
I enjoyed attending the International Bariatric Club in Oxford, UK.
I had the privilege of presenting my outcome data on the SADI procedure and participated in a panel discussion on other aspects of bariatric surgery.
The meeting also allowed me to meet and discuss bariatric surgery with surgeons from all over the world including USA, UK, Mexico, and South America.
Long Term Studies Confirm Effectiveness of Bariatric Surgery
Recent bariatric research has demonstrated that surgery reduces the risk of newly diagnosed cancer by nearly 50%. The study from the USA, analysed data from 55,750 patients, who had had bariatric surgery followed for over 10 years, and demonstrated reduction in many types of cancer including breast cancer, colon cancer and ovarian cancer.
Another study again from USA reported long term results of trials comparing bariatric surgery with medical therapy for type 2 diabetes. The study reported results out to 12 years which is the longest time frame studied to date and demonstrated better diabetic remission and control in the surgical group with sustained weight loss in the surgical group.
